ZTE AXON7 MAX is the first mobile phone to implement Live Finger Detection™ Technology, significantly enhancing security and protection for mobile users.

October 27, 2016, Beijing, China – Goodix announced today that ZTE AXON7 MAX is the first mobile phone to implement Live Finger Detection™ (LFD) Technology. The fingerprint sensing technology can distinguish real fingers from fake or cloned fingerprints, greatly enhancing the security of mobile devices. LFD is also expected to raise the security standard for mobile payment and other applications to the next level.

ZTE AXON7 MAX built with LFD enhances mobile payment security

ZTE AXON7 MAX, the company’s flagship mobile phone in 2016, is built with Live Finger Detection™,  glasses-free 3D 6" screen, rear-mounted dual-camera (13-megapixel color+13-megapixel black and white), dual hi-fi stereo speakers, 4100mAh high-density Li-Po battery, and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. It is the world’s first commercially available hardware and software integrated fingerprint sensing solution which can distinguish real fingerprints from fake 2D or 3D clones.

Fingerprint authentication on today’s mobile devices has not been as reliable as previously claimed. Hackers have found some success in using cloned or fake fingerprints to hack fingerprint sensors on mobile devices. The biometric verification of the LFD sensor, however, provides an added layer of security and increases the reliability of fingerprint authentication, empowering users to trust their mobile transactions more than ever before.

Besides raising the bar for mobile device security standards, the LFD sensor is a valuable resource to the health-conscious consumer. With the increased adoption of wearable fitness trackers, consumers are more interested in monitoring and improving their overall fitness and well-being. One way to do that is through key health indicator like the heart rate. Through the optical sensing capabilities within the sensor, users can easily monitor their resting heart while taking a break at work or their active heart rate on a run while stopped at a red light – all by just touch on their mobile device.

The market demands for more secure mobile payment solutions

According to research firm eMarketer, 195.3 million people will use mobile payment applications in 2016. With more than 50% of smartphone users in China expected to rely on mobile payments to purchase for goods and services in 2016, China UnionPay recently released the “Guide to Biometrical Authentication Technology”. Aiming to establish universal standards for biometrics-based authentication methods, the application of live finger detection is a key topic in the document, emphasizing market demand for the technology.

LFD technology is fully compatible with popular mobile payments applications such as Alipay and WeChat Pay, enabling a seamless and secure mobile payment experience. While the hardware and software integrated solution helps enhance security, it does not sacrifice performance and user experience. The sensor can recognize a fingerprint and unlock a phone in less than 0.15 second, providing convenience in daily use.

Fully integrated fingerprint and optical sensors

LFD technology is invented by Goodix and is specifically designed for mobile usage. Integrated in a single-die structure, it is small in size, durable and reliable, and can be covered by glass panel or other coating materials. The LFD sensor integrates fingerprint and optical sensors in one package. While the sensor scans a user’s fingerprint, the optical sensor uses infrared to detect human tissue and confirms the fingerprint is from a live finger. Besides, ZTE Axon7 MAX also adopts In-cell touch solution from Goodix.

Setting industry security standard

It was once uncommon for flagship phones from top mobile brands to adopt solutions from an IC designer originated from China, but Goodix has changed the stereotype by inventing a series of cutting-edge technologies ahead of its Western competitors. Ingrained with an innovative spirit and an ever-growing passion for biometric technologies, Goodix will continue to create innovations with the focus on clients. Through a high level of integration with software and hardware, Goodix aims to provide mobile brands around the world with a diverse selection of solutions to make mobile experience more secure and more convenient. Once “made in China” but now “created in China,” innovations never stop at Goodix.
